To the untrained eye, magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) is a commodity, white powder is white powder. From a technical perspective, however, the variance in performance is drastic. The efficacy of climbing chalk is defined by three primary vectors: Purity, Lattice Structure, and Hygroscopic Efficiency.

Industrial-grade chalk often contains significant impurities, primarily Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3). While chemically similar, Calcium Carbonate behaves differently under moisture; it tends to slime rather than absorb, creating a "paste" layer between skin and rock that actually reduces the coefficient of friction. "Applyability" is a function of particle density. A lattice structure that is too coarse will sit on top of the friction ridges (fingerprints), acting as ball bearings that cause slippage. A structure that is too fine becomes volatile dust that blows away before contact. We target a specific mesh profile designed to fill the microscopic valleys of the skin's friction ridges. Many commercial brands introduce drying agents (silica or resin) to artificially accelerate absorption. Friction Is Subjective.

There is no "universal best" chalk because there is no universal skin type. Friction is not a static property of the rock; it is a dynamic relationship between the Environment (Humidity/Temperature) and the Organism (Sweat Rate/Skin pH).

Sweat composition varies significantly across populations. Factors such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), sebaceous gland activity (oil production), and even diet affect how moisture is released from the pores. A chalk formula that performs in the dry, cold air of Fontainbleau may fail catastrophically in the 90% humidity of a Thai summer.

We recognize that the "drying power" required for a climber varies across different climates.
Dry: Require a chalk that retains some skin moisture to prevent "dry firing" (glassy slips).
Humid: Require a highly porous structure capable of managing rapid moisture accumulation without saturation.

How To (Properly) Apply Chalk

Don't just dip. Most people just dip their hands in the bucket and pull them out. That is actually the wrong way to do it. From a physics perspective, having a thick pile of loose powder sitting on top of your skin is bad. Those loose particles act like tiny ball bearings between your hand and the rock, they actually make you slip more.

To get maximum friction, you don't want to "coat" the skin; you want to fill the texture. Your fingerprints are made of tiny peaks and valleys. The goal is to force the chalk into those valleys to absorb sweat at the source.

• Put your hands deep into the bag (or ziplock).
• Grab a handful of chalk and rub your hands together aggressively.
• Don't be gentle. You need to create friction and heat. By rubbing hard inside the confined space, you are forcing the fine particles into the lines of your skin and displacing the natural oils.

Once your hands are white, take them out and blow sharply on your palms.

• If a cloud of dust flies off: You have too much. That loose layer will fly off anyway once you get contact with the hold/rock and it might carry away some of the compressed chalk that locked into the fingerprints.
• The Ideal State: After blowing, your skin should look "ghost white."

This thin, compacted base layer provides the highest coefficient of friction. It ensures that the chalk is interacting directly with your sweat and the rock surface, rather than creating a slipping layer of loose dust in between.
